The College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences offers several graduate degree programs, our largest is Biomedical Sciences (BIMS). Students can earn a BIMS Master’s degree with a Thesis Option or a Non-Thesis Option, or a Doctorate degree through any department in the CVM. The BIMS graduate degree program is centralized within the Office of Research & Graduate Studies, therefore the admissions information described below pertains only to this degree program.

The Department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences offers two additional programs of study, a Master of Science & Technology Journalism (STJR) and Master of Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health (VPHE) . There are also interdisciplinary programs with close ties to the CVM through which students may pursue a Masters or PhD degree (Toxicology). Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master’s – Thesis Option (MS) programs

The PhD and MS Thesis Option programs provide a curriculum and research experience that allows a student to gain the knowledge and experience to move into professional research environments including academic, government, and industrial laboratories. Before submitting an application, prospective students interested in this degree program should follow these steps:

    English proficiency. Those scores can be found below:
    • a TOEFL score of at least 80 on TOEFL iBT (550 paper-based), or
    • an IELTS score of at least 6.0, or
    • a GRE Verbal Reasoning score of at least 146 (400 on the old scale), or
    • a GMAT Verbal score of at least 22, or
    • a PTE Academic score of at least 53
  • Identify a Faculty Mentor – Applicants to the Thesis Master’s or Doctor of Philosophy degrees must identify a faculty mentor prior to submitting an application. It is expected that the faculty mentor will provide a graduate assistantship stipend as well as funds for research expenses involved throughout the degree.   • Identify an academic track within the program – Applicants will need to select a track they most identify with. The different tracks and information about them can be found here.

Master’s Non-Thesis Option (MS) Program

The MS Non-Thesis Option degree has a curriculum designed to prepare students for future study or professional employment. Students seeking this type of degree will participate in science courses but also have the flexibility to choose courses from within and outside of the college to match their interests and have the necessary preparation for their future endeavors. Before submitting an application, prospective students interested in the MS Non-Thesis Option program should follow these steps:

  • Ensure that you meet all eligibility requirements – Applicants considering applying to the MS Non-Thesis program in the CVM must meet the minimum standards. This includes having a minimum of baccalaureate degree (or its equivalent) awarded from an accredited institution of higher education, satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), or the Dental Admissions test (DAT), and are required  to have a strong coursework foundation in the sciences. Students must also have a strong interest in continuing onto professional school.
